Traditions sustained through practice and belief
Spiritual and living traditions are expressed through ritual, pilgrimage, prayer, architecture, objects, oral teaching, festivals, food, music, and everyday acts of devotion.
These traditions are often layered and locally specific. They cannot be adequately represented through generalised descriptions alone.
Our work approaches them with humility and sensitivity. We seek to understand how practices are lived, transmitted, interpreted, and adapted by communities.
Documentation in this area may involve:
- Oral histories
- Ritual and seasonal practices
- Sacred materials and objects
- Local knowledge systems
- Community custodianship
- Relationships between place and belief
- Contemporary questions of continuity and change
We respect the boundaries established by communities and knowledge holders, including practices or information that should not be recorded or publicly circulated.
