Food and Material Culture

Culture is also made, prepared, shared, and remembered

Food traditions contain knowledge about land, seasons, cultivation, preservation, trade, ritual, household practice, and community.

Our work explores food not only as consumption, but as material culture: a way in which people relate to place, environment, ancestry, celebration, and one another.

We may document:

  • Regional ingredients and preparation methods
  • Seasonal and ceremonial foods
  • Household knowledge
  • Local systems of preservation
  • Traditional tools and material practices
  • Food-related memories and narratives
  • Relationships between food, ecology, and community

Our intention is to represent these traditions with context and respect, avoiding the reduction of living food cultures to trends or commodities.
